This training was designed for first year tutors. Tutors participated in four workshops during their first year of tutoring where they received staff feedback and learned from their peers.

(1) New tutors often run into very similar challenges while learning how to be an effective teacher, and while the information covered in their introductory training, survey results indicated tutors needed additional training.
(2) Survey data also indicated that because tutoring occurs one-on-one, new tutors often felt alone and got discouraged early on in their participation.
(1) Once a tutor has some tutoring experience they were able to focus in on the solutions most relevant to them during their workshop.
(2) The discussion based training let tutors to know that others are encountering the same challenges that they were. Post-participation survey data helped tutors to feel less alone and discouraged because they get to interact with their peers, ask questions, and get advice.
(1) In surveys, new tutors reported feeling more confident and engaged following their workshops.
(2) Tutor retention rates increased from 60% to over 80% after the workshops were implemented.
(3) This training is also provided to tutors as reference material, so that they have tools to address current challenges or new ones if they arise.
