This training program was designed for tutors to complete during their four years of tutoring. Trainings focused on education, poverty, and leadership.
Throughout this process I worked closely with a team of six staff members. We created the tiered learning structure, experimented with the types and frequency of training, conducted needs analysis, consulted with subject matter experts, and made updates and changes based on participant feedback and program evaluation.

(1) Our volunteer tutors were not required to have teaching experience.
(2) Many of our tutors came from high income backgrounds and did not have an understanding of poverty, educational issues, or culturally responsive teaching strategies, while our tutees were low-income students often struggling in school.
(3) Some of our tutors wanted to be more involved than the once a week requirement and wished to take on a leadership role.
(1) The Program Training, Field Work, Peer & Instructor Discussion Workshop, and Growth Mindset Teaching sessions provided our tutors with information about teaching strategy, hands on practice, and allowed our tutors to learn from one another.
(2) The Parent Orientation and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Workshop taught our volunteers about poverty and the issues affecting our low-income students.
(3) The Leadership Training allowed our experienced tutors the opportunity to dedicate more time to the organization by training new tutors.
(1) 95% of tutors completed the training process.
(2) As more trainings were implemented, yearly program retention increased from 60%-80% for both tutors and tutees.
(3) Experienced tutors were able to take part in the training process, which allowed new tutors to get more direct feedback and improve their tutoring skills.
(4) The tiered training process helped fulfill the organizational mission of educating both tutors and tutees.
